A Close Shave                   Sunday 27th August 2006 ____________________________________________________________________

A friendly against a team from our division.  We still had players missing, but only a few.  We had had a close game against these last season, and they had changed their set-up to be more competitive.  The usual captains returned.  We still had problems with the Dictaphone, so again this is just a collection of recollections, not in the right order, but at least something!

Game 1 - The line up was:

Sam B

Jack     Callum

Josef     Josh     Jordan

Joe

Rolling Sub:  Joel

A long goal kick bounced once and then Joe brought it down on his chest on the turn and struck it well, but the ‘keeper made a great save turning it wide for a corner.  We then caused confusion in their area with a long throw from Joe which was followed by sustained pressure but they broke and had a shot at the near post, but Sam was down quick to make a great save.  Callum then cleared long to Josh who flicked it over the defender and shot, but their ‘keeper made the save.  They then attacked and two of our players dived in and missed.  The subsequent shot was brilliantly saved by Sam.

HALF-TIME : DEERSWOOD     0     FRYS     0

Jack played a great ball down the line to Joe and he turned the defender, went down the line and crossed to where Josh challenged the ‘keeper.  The ball spun loose and Josh leaped to it and shot on the turn 0-1.  We attacked in numbers, Joel had a shot then Jordan, but there were too many players in the way.  A massive kick came down to Josh who turned and shot but saved by the ‘keeper.  It came out to Joel who also shot, but again the ‘keeper saved it.  They had a corner which was bundled towards the line but Sam got down well to save.  They then had another chance and a thunderous shot ricocheted up off of the crossbar and over.

Game 2 - The line up was:

Joel

Sam B     Spike

James     Dan     Max

Sam K

Rolling Sub:  Chilly

For this game Chilly started sub as he was late arriving.  This lateness was due to confusion over the game still being on and subsequently Chilly was sat watching The X Factor at 11.10am!  Sam K went down the line and put a great ball into the box, but Dan’s shot was saved by the ‘keeper.  From a big throw, the ball bounced around in our area not being cleared.  It was pounced on by their attacker and Joel made a great save low down.  Sam B passed forward to Sam K.  He battled through about four challenges before the ball came wide to James and he shot, but just wide.  They won a corner and as it came in Chilly cleverly headed it just wide of our back post.  No danger of an own goal whatsoever!!!

HALF-TIME : DEERSWOOD     0     FRYS     0

A big throw over the top was controlled by Max who turned and shot, but into the side netting.  A high corner came in at us, over our defender’s head and an attacking Deerswood player gave Joel no chance with the head 1-0.  A great ball from Spike to Max saw Max turn, beat two players and shoot, but the shot went just wide.  A great ball out to the right to from Sam B was controlled by Dan and he in turn found Sam K.  He went forward before spotting Chilly free in the middle and got the ball to him.  Chilly was one on one with the ‘keeper and as he got close, just calmly passed the ball past him and into the net 1-1.  They had a corner which Chilly defended well to win on the front post and the break was on.  He beat two defenders and with one more to go, spotted Dan in the middle and got the ball to him.  Dan controlled it and turned towards goal where he passed it past the ‘keeper, but unfortunately it went just the wrong side of the post.

FULL-TIME : DEERSWOOD     1     FRYS     1

OVERALL RESULT : DEERSWOOD    1     FRYS    2

Afterthoughts…………………………………………………

This was a tough game against an opposition who had improved immeasurably from last season.  Chatting to them afterwards they said that they had cut those players not committed and all they had were those who wanted to be there week in week out fighting for their place.  They will upset a lot of teams this season and I don’t envy the team who have them for the first league game!!!   We were strong, and we never gave up, and whilst they did have chances I felt we had more and in the end deserved to win.  Well done boys.
