Mad Max 2                   Sunday 3rd September 2006

____________________________________________________________________

Our first proper League game and we were back down to Deerswood where we had played the week before!  That had been a close game which had saw us emerge victorious, what would happen this time?  Dave K had kindly supplied a digital Dictaphone so “Andy on the mic” was back in business.

Game 1 - The line up was:

Joby

Jack     Callum

Josh     Joel     Tom

Joe

Rolling Sub:  Josef

Tom took a big throw which was headed clear back to him.  He ran at them, past two challenges across goal and took a shot, which the ‘keeper turned away for a corner.  The corner came in and was hit up and goal-wards to land on the roof of the net.  Parent’s cheered, but in vain.  Josef beat a player and found Joel.  His ball inside went to Josh who in turn found Tom on the left.  Tom had a shot but the ‘keeper made the save.  The ball came loose in the area and a mass scramble saw it turned towards goal quite a few times.  It went wide and back in and into the net, but the ball had crossed the line on the way in so a goal kick was given.  They had a throw which Tom won and ran in from the left side, past a defender and he shot, but the ‘keeper pushed it onto the crossbar and out for a corner.  Callum produced a great throw to Tom and he found Joe who turned and shot high but unfortunately just too high.  They took a goal kick which came right the way through to Callum.  He passed it to Josh who in turn found Joel.  Joel played it to Joe who went past the last defender and passed it past the ‘keeper, but unfortunately just the wrong side of the post.

HALF-TIME : DEERSWOOD     0     FRYS     0

A ball out was chased by Joe and he got it inside to Tom, He sent it back wide to Joe who crossed in for Josh, but the ‘keeper got there just ahead of him.  A good throw down the line from Callum was picked up by Joe.  He beat a player, then cut inside another and the ball rolled across goal where Joel was storming in, but his shot was just wide.  They then had a throw on their right.  It bounced and three players let it go through them to where a Deerswood player was in on goal.  Joby came out to narrow the angle, but it was hit past him into the back of the net 1-0.  They then had another break and were almost through past Jack.  They had a shot which hit Jack, sending Joby the wrong way, but he reacted quickly to get his hand to it and pushed it around the post for a corner.

Man of the Match – Chosen by Gareth Chilcott for excellent play and continuous effort  Joel

Game 2 - The line up was:

Jamie

Sam B     Mark

Jim     Sam K     Max

Chilly

Rolling Sub:  Spike

1-0 down from the first game and we needed a good start.  They won a corner which Sam B cleared.  The shot was hit back in, Mark tried to head it out and only succeeded in deflecting it past Jamie 1-0.  Sam B cleared to Sam K who ran and crossed it, but just too far ahead of Jim and Chilly.  We forced a corner, which in turn forced a melee.  The ball eventually came out to Mark who shot, but it was just wide.  Sam K worked hard and got the ball to Chilly.  He beat a player, got in on goal, but his shot was just too close to the ‘keeper.  Sam K launched down the right wing and crossed it in.  Max reached for it and his touch turned it goal-wards, but the ‘keeper made the save.  Nearing half-time and their attack was broken up by Sam K on the edge of our area.  He ran forward, and as he approached their area he played it into Chilly who had two defenders around him.  Chilly did the simple thing and laid it back into his past and he buried it into the bottom left corner of the goal 1-1.  They decided to shoot from kick off which Jamie safely gathered and kicked it right down the field.  It bounced twice and they missed it, but Max had gambled and as it came down for the third bounce he volleyed it into the bottom left corner to put us up in this game and bring the overall match level 1-2.

HALF-TIME : DEERSWOOD     1     FRYS     2

From the kick off they tried another shot which Jamie saved again.  He again launched downfield which Jim chased.  He got to the bouncing ball and crossed it first time to where Max was storming in and he headed it so hard that the ‘keeper could only parry it into the net 1-3.  They attacked again and Jamie charged wide to clear it, but it fell invitingly to their attacker who shot.  Sam B was there and it appeared to hit his stomach (although apparently it hit his hand after – ball to hand, not deliberate!), and the ref’ gave a penalty.  Jamie stood tall and reached to his right to make a great save and push it away for a corner.  From the corner, Sam B won it and hit it across to Jim.  Jim went forward to Chilly who in turn found Spike on the halfway line.  Spike got it back to Chilly and he hit it through the middle to Sam K.  He took the ball left and hit a first time high shot into the back of the net 1-4.  Deerswood were still in it however and from a throw, their attacker cut inside and unleashed a shot which seemed destined for the top corner until at the last minute Jamie’s hands came up and touched it over.  A long ball forward by Sam B came to Max who knocked it inside to Spike.  Spike found Max again with the return pass and he ghosted past two players but the final shot was just wide.  A shot came in which Mark blocked with his body, it was hit up and Sam B raised his hands, which the ball appeared to hit, but the ref’ motioned to play on and it bounced towards the line where Jamie grasped it just in time.

Afterthoughts…………………………………………………

What a game that was!  After not doing very well against Keynsham, the B-Team were fantastic to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.  That’s not to criticise the A-Team.  They were very strong and only gave Deerswood one clear opportunity in 40 minutes of football and created quite a few chances which on another day will become goals.

On a note about the Match Reports, in the past we have endeavoured to name every player who played at least once.  This season it really will be the main moments of the game.  We know for instance that Josh tackled well and won the ball, or that Joby was solid in goal, but unless it pertains to a key moment in the game, then it won’t make the final cut.  Obviously over the course of the season I expect every player to get numerous mentions.

The Cup Draw has been made for Sunday 17th September and we have been drawn at HOME to Saltford Stars in the first round.
