The Deer Hunter                   Sunday 17th December 2006

____________________________________________________________________

We prepared ourselves to play FDS but had a few set-backs.  Jim and Joe were away, Callum, Chilly & Sam B all missed the Friday training due to illness, and Mark banged his head at training and saw double!  By Sunday, those four were available to play, but the game had been rained off.

We then got ready for Cadbury Heath.  Sam B & Mark were away, Callum was ill again on the Friday and Josh banged his foot so hard it was first thought to be broken.  Luckily it was just badly bruised, but he was out for the game.  Friday night, the game was cancelled!

Next attempt, and the last game before a break for Christmas was Deerswood.  It was a cold morning and the pitch was half-frozen with ice forming on the bottom of the players’ boots.

Game 1 - The line up was:

Joby

Jack     Callum

Josh     Joel     Tom

Joe

Rolling Subs:  Dan & Luke

A big throw from Joe was knocked on by Joel which Josh chased.  Both their ‘keeper and defender left it for the other so Josh got it, went past the ‘keeper but unfortunately took it out before he could turn back for goal.  A huge throw into the box by Joe was met by Jack on the volley. But their ‘keeper saved it.  A superb run down the line from Tom saw a cross across the face of the goal, which somehow evaded everyone and went for a goal-kick.  A great corner swung in from Joe was met at the back post by Callum, but it was just wide.  We then saw the ball played into Joe’s feet, he flicked it over the defender and volleyed it as it came down, but it was wide.

HALF-TIME : FRYS   0    DEERSWOOD   0

They had their first real attempts on goal, with a shot being parried by Joby and the follow up being cleared off of the line by Josh.  They then hit the ball into the area, it hit Josh on the leg and bounced up onto his arm, but the ref’ gave a penalty.  Joby guessed the right way and got his hands to it, but it was hit just too hard and ended in the net 0-1.  They won the ball by our line and shot, which saw a great save by Joby, but the ref’ ruled that the ball had already gone out.  We had a breakout of four players which was lost and suddenly we were outnumbered as they attacked, but again we saw a great save by Joby.  A big throw from the left came to Luke on the right.  He controlled it with one touch, then shot with his next, but it was just over.  They then passed back to their ‘keeper and he picked it up forcing a free-kick on the edge of the area, but we didn’t work it very well and it was cleared to the sound of the final whistle.

Game 2 - The line up was:

Jamie

Sam B     Mark

Spike     Sam K     Max

Chilly

Rolling Sub:  Jim

The ball came across the field in their half, but the Deerswood player hit a massive shot which Jamie pushed wide.  Mark cleared out of defence to the left and Max jinked left and right past players but their were too many in their area and they cleared it.  Sam B hit a great ball out to Chilly and he found Max through, but their ‘keeper came out to make a great save.  A corner was swung into their box and their ‘keeper parried the ball and it fell behind him where a player on the line cleared it.  They then worked a couple of good one-two’s and Jamie made a great save on the line.  Some great link play between Sam K and Max saw a ball in for Chilly and he passed it past the ‘keeper into the far corner 1-0.  Soon after it was half-time.

HALF-TIME : FRYS   1    DEERSWOOD   0

A long throw into the box was headed on by Sam K to Chilly who beat their ‘keeper to the ball, knocking it past him as he did, but it went just the wrong side of the post.  They were still dangerous however and Jamie was out quickly to make a save with his legs.  A high ball was chased by Chilly, his first shot being saved by the ‘keeper but he got to the rebound and hit it past the ‘keeper onto the left hand post.  It then rolled along the line, hit the right hand post and rolled out again where it was cleared.  We hit another ball into their area and it hit their defender and could have gone anywhere, however it rolled just the wrong side of the post for a corner.  A ball through saw Chilly in on the ‘keeper.  He went to pass it past him as he had for the goal, but the ‘keeper stuck out a leg and just stopped it.

Afterthoughts…………………………………………………

I cannot remember our team creating so many chances in a game without scoring them!  We should have been 5-0 up at half-time in the first game alone, and with a bit of luck, Chilly would have got five in his game.  As it was we didn’t, and in the second half of both games, Deerswood were better than us and could have easily won the game.  It’s a shame to finally drop points, but we have Christmas to get over it and come back fresh in 2007.  Merry Christmas to you all, and a Happy New Year.  Andy.
