The full squad was available, but Andy chose to change the team around to compensate their tall players in the ‘B’ team and the set-piece threat, so Jack and Mark swapped teams.

Game 1 - The line up was:

Joby

Joel     Callum

Mark     Josh     Tom

Joe

Rolling Subs: Luke & Dan

They attacked from the kick and Joel won it well.  He passed down the line for Tom who went across to Mark.  Mark played a reverse pass for Josh to chase, but their ‘keeper got there just in time.  From a corner Tom closed down but they skipped past him and shot through the crowd past the unsighted Joby 0-1.  Dan took a nice throw, got it back and found Joe and he hit a brilliant ball through, but unfortunately no one had made the run.  A high shot in was parried by Joby, and as they chased in, Joby dived on it to claim it.  We had the ball but lost it and suddenly it was two on Callum.  He held them up and Dan raced back hard and they were forced to hit wide.

HALF-TIME : FRYS   0    L/WESTON   1

Tom won the ball and ran past two players to shoot, but unfortunately the ‘keeper made a great save.  They took a goal kick which Tom won, ran past a player onto his right, and his shot was high and over.  They took a throw which Callum headed on, but it came to their player so fast that he couldn’t control it and it went wide.  Joel won it on the left and went down the line where he crossed it to Dan on the right, and he took a shot, but the ‘keeper grasped it.  Their ‘keeper took the drop kick and as it came down Tom hit it first time, but unfortunately just wide.  Tom went down the line and passed inside to Josh who turned and shot, but the ‘keeper made the save.  From a goal kick they hit it hard and high but Joby got across quick and made the save.  They won a corner on the left that was hit high towards the back post and their attacker headed it down towards goal.  There were two defenders on the line, but it bounced up and neither could do anything about it 0-2.  Josh won it well and got it to Joel.  He found Tom who hit a low scorcher, but it just went wide of the far post.  They then won a free kick 20 yards out which was hit into our box towards goal.  I’m not sure if Mark deflected it past Joby or whether he was just unsighted, however the result was the same 0-3.  Nice interplay between Mark and Joe led to a shot from Mark at the near post but the ‘keeper made the save.

Game 2 - The line up was:

Jamie

Sam B     Jack

Spike     Sam K     Max

Chilly

Rolling Subs: Jim & Josef

Spike & Jack won the ball well, and got it down the line for Spike to chase, forcing a corner.  It was taken short to Sam K and he crossed to the back post where Max turned it just the wrong side of the post.  A massive kick by Jamie bounced once, their defender headed it the wrong way and as it came down Chilly tried to guide it past the ‘keeper but it went just the wrong side of the post.  Sam K crossed from deep and at the back post Chilly headed goal-wards only to see the ball hit the ‘keeper in the face and bounce wide.  Their ‘keeper took a goal kick which came to Chilly and he shot as the ‘keeper was running back and as he was turning to look for the ball, it entangled in his legs and he fell on it.  They had a fast attacker who got through, but Sam B never gave up and eventually made the sliding tackle to clear the ball.  A huge kick from Spike out wide was met first time by Chilly as it came down, but it went just the wrong side of the post.  From a quick throw Sam hit inside to Chilly and he went forward to Max, who had a shot, but the ‘keeper caught it well.  Sam K won the ball and played wide to the run of Spike.  He turned inside and found Jack, who in turn found Max.  Max got to the bye-line and laid it across, beating the ‘keeper to where Chilly was odds on to score.  He had his foot angled to pass into the open net, but it hit the wrong part and went agonisingly the wrong side of the post.

HALF-TIME : FRYS   0    L/WESTON   0

A long kick to Max saw him hit it first time as he was closed down, but again the wrong side of the post.  Jim played Max in, he beat two players but shot as a third just got his foot in and it went out for a corner.  We took a short corner, Sam K to Max, and Max hit a lovely cross in and Jack, from a metre out leathered it, but somehow their ‘keeper got a hand to it.  Their attacker was through, and Jamie, for the first time in the game was called into action and slid in well with his feet to win the ball.  It bounced loose from the challenge and he dived on it.  Max & Sam K again worked well to get the ball inside to where Jack, now virtually a second forward hit it hard, but again the ‘keeper was in inspired form.

Afterthoughts…………………………………………………

The film that the headline at the top of this Match Report refers to, is about what happens when a young lady misses the train home, but at the same time shows how her life would have turned out if she had caught that train!  How would this game have turned out if the ‘B’ team had not missed all of the opportunities that they created.  The fact that Jamie had just one save to make in 40 minutes speaks volumes for the game.  On another day we would have caught the train and scored ten, but today we missed it!  The ‘A’ team came up against a very good team, who also tore apart St Nicks, although I have to say that with Tom out of it (Hay Fever had hit him an hour before), Joe not playing at his best, and Josh off twice for lengthy spells with injuries, the team were up against it from the start.  It would be interesting to see that game with the whole team flying.  That said, you will always get games where nothing goes right, and it’s how you respond which shows the mark of the team, and with FDS just two days later, we will see just what this team are made of.
