Rivers Of Chocolate Again!              Sunday 26th September 2004 ____________________________________________________________________

This was always going to be a poignant game.  Although he could come to Keynsham at any time and play, this was Charlie’s last official game.

Game 1 - The line up was:

Joe B

Jack     Tom

Josh

Max     Luke A     Dan

Rolling Subs: Oscar, Callum & Sam B

A Keynsham player went on run that no one could catch, and neither could Joby although he made a valient effort 0-1.  They attacked again and it took a great clearance in front of goal by Jack to deny another!  Jack and Tom then combined in defence well, but they still managed to get their shot in.  This time Joby was equal to it and made the save.  Good play by both Josh & Dan signalled our arrival at the game.  Tom tackled and won the ball.  He followed up with a run upfield but Keynsham got the ball back.  They attacked again but good defending by Jack was followed by a calm pass back to Joby.

We attacked, and this time it was Luke who had a shot, but it was wide.  They managed to win a cornerwhich was lofted into our box.  From the melee, Jack got the ball clear and although it came back in, Jack again cleared.  Keynsham then had a dangerous attack but our defence pushed them wide and clear.  A Keynsham player then went on a run, but he was ably tackled by Callum, then Sam slid in with a tackle to clear.  We went back up their end and Dan shot into the ‘keeper’s hands.  Another Keynsham attack and Oscar was alert to make a good clearance.  Tom then got forward with the ball, but they defended well.  We then won the ball and passing from Callum to Dan and then back led to another attack, which ended with a shot wide.

HALF-TIME: FRYS   0   KEYNSHAM TOWN   1

Sam went on a run and twice shot straight at the ‘keeper, the second after he couldn’t hold the first.  We began to exert more authority on the game and a good run down the wing by Luke had Keynsham scrambling back.  Tom then cleared what proved to be a dwindling attack by Keynsham as we firmly took control of the ball.  Sam got the ball to Dan and his run was halted near their goal.  Luke cleared well from a Keynsham attack and Dan was in the clear, but their big defender got back to concede a Frys corner.  Sam’s shot was blocked on the line.  Then, Sam had two more chances but put both wide.

Max then played a lovely ball to Sam but he couldn’t get the shot away.  Keynsham had a rare attack and Jack, Callum and Max were all back defending.  Josh and Sam then went on the attack and won a throw.  Sam threw to Josh and his resulting shot was wide.  Jack cleared the ball to Max but Keynsham cleared.  A Callum run was brought down outside the area, Jack shot but the ‘keeper saved.  Jack then playaed a lovely ball to Max who went on a run before passing to Sam but his shot was blocked.  Josh then had a shot saved.  At this point Anita on the mic asked the question “How are we not scoring?”  I couldn’t answer!  Sam shot but it hit the post, and we had more attacks but none led to a goal.

Game 2 - The line up was:

Jamie G

James     Jamie C

Ethan

Jordan      Josef     Sam P

Rolling Subs:  Mark, Joe C & Charlie

Jim blocked an attack right at the start, similar to the start of the first game but this time they didn’t score!  James and Jim then  passed the ball in defence well.  Ethan passed to Jordan , but his run was crowded out by three Keynsham players.  They then attacked but James was there to block.  Ethan then passed to Josef, but Keynsham cleared again.  Keynsham had a rare attack and Jamie had to be alert to make a good save.  Josef & James defended well together but Jim’s clearance was straight to a Keynsham player.  He attacked but Jim made amends and cleared the ball by running the whole length of the field, but their ‘keeper blocked the shot.

They then struck back but Jamie made a fantastic block.  Ethan then passed to James, who passed to Josef, but his run was cleared.  Mark then was called into action with some solid defending.  The ball bobbled about in our area but Joe and Jamie combined to clear.  Mark played a lovely ball to Joe and he passed upfield to Jordan which was returned to Joe.  His great shot however went into the side netting.  Mark then passed to Charlie and on to Josef, but his shot was blocked.

HALF-TIME: FRYS   0   KEYNSHAM TOWN   0

We started the second half with some nice passing between Josef and Charlie.  Josef then went into the area and had a shot blocked by four Keynsham players.  They then had what was an increasingly rare attack but Joe’s sliding tackle cleared the danger.  Joe passed the ball to Jordan but his cross was blocked.  Then came the moment that we had all hoped would happen.  The ball came to Charlie.  He ran forwards and unleashed an unstoppable shot that rifled in, the back of the net billowed and the crowd went wild with jubilation 1-0.

Mark played the ball to Ethan, and his run won us a corner.  Keynsham had an attack but Jim was on hand with a solid block tackle.  Up the other end and Ethan’s shot was saved.  An excellent passage of play followed with some fine passing which eventually led to Sam shooting wide.  This was followed with more as Mark passed to Ethan, passed back to Mark, passed to Sam, passed to Joe and his shot was well saved.  Nearing the end of the game and Joe went for a long, high shot, over their ‘keeper and into the goal 2-0.  Keynsham had one last desperate attack to gain the overall draw but both Ethan and Jamie blocked their shots.

Afterthoughts………………………………………………………………

What a great couple of games and an emotional send off for Charlie afterwards, we wish him all the best in his new life.  As for the games, Keynsham have massively improved, but we were still the dominant force in both games.  In the first, Sam Black made the difference, stopping us time and time again, in the second it was the Alamo , but we got through eventually.  Well done to both teams.
