The Saints Go Marching On           Sunday 12th February 2006 ____________________________________________________________________

Jack, James and Joe were away, Luke was ill.  The Ridings was its usual wet, cold and muddy place, but the welcome was warm.

Game 1 - The line up was:

Joby

Sam B     Mark

Josef     Jim     Max

Sam K

Rolling Sub: Ethan

Josef won the ball and played it up the line to Sam K.  He touched it inside to Jim who pushed it past a player but it was cleared for a throw.  It was however, some good one touch passing.  Their attacker battled through both Sam B and Mark, each time getting the run of the ball, so Joby had to be quick out and forced him to shoot into the side netting.  They attacked down our left and Joby came out.  He won the ball but it was knocked clear, then Sam B deflected a shot into the middle where both Jim and Mark were on the line, and it was Mark who made the goal line stop.  Joby kicked out to Josef and he passed down the line to Jim.  He beat a defender and went for the cross, but the ‘keeper was first there.  From the goal kick, Jim won it and passed it to Sam K.  He knocked it past one defender, but the other got his toe to it and prodded it back to the ‘keeper.  They broke from our corner and Mark had to chase back and the tackle broke for Joby.  His kick out was a bit short however, and the midfielder hit it first time, but wide.  They broke again, and both Mark and Sam B made tackles but they won it back.  The shot beat Joby, but Ethan was back on the line to clear.  They had a throw level with their box.  With our seven players behind the ball, the player ran, only Jim and Sam B tried to make tackles before he blasted it high past Joby 1-0.  They then won a corner.  It flew in and Mark got his head to it and it started to come down on the penalty spot.  Their attacker volleyed it goalwards and although Joby parried it high and then caught it as it came down, the goal was given.  Joby later told me that it had not crossed the line, but the ref’ had given it 2-0.

HALF-TIME : ST NICK’S ‘B’   2     FRYS   0

Almost from the kick they attacked.  Sam B made the tackle, but the ball came loose and as Joby came out, the attacker just lifted it over him 3-0.  The next attack saw the ball come in, hit the post, Max block and then Max and Joby combine to clear for another corner.  Sam K and Ethan did a one-two down the line, before crossing to Max, but he was closed down as he tried to shoot.  Jim threw to Sam K.  He turned and struck it well, but it fell into the ‘keeper’s arms.  Ethan battled through three tackles and had a shot.  The ‘keeper was going the wrong way, but somehow managed to get his hand to it.  It came out to Max who shot, then Sam K who shot before finally Jim, but all of the shots were blocked.  From a goal kick, Ethan ran and shot, but it was just over.  Sam K and Ethan then one-two’d their way into the box, but Ethan’s final shot with his left foot just lacked power.  They had a rare breakaway, and Sam B slid in to tackle just as he was going to shoot.  From the corner however, no one took responsibility, it wasn’t cleared, and it ended up in the back of the net 4-0.

Man of the Match – Chosen by Andy for brilliant play and good defending  Sam Burgess

Game 2 - The line up was:

Jamie

Callum     Oscar

Jordan     Josh     Tom

Dan

Rolling Sub: Spike

From the first attack, Josh won the ball and gained a throw.  The ball came in, bounced up and hit their defender on the hand, penalty.  Although the ‘keeper bounced around on his line like a Tasmanian Devil, Tom held his nerve and slotted it into the bottom right hand corner 0-1.  They all cross the halfway line for an attack so Dan wanders into their half.  Callum won the ball from their throw, found Tom who belted it forwards.  One of their defenders must have realised the danger however as he managed to get back and get a toe to it, conceding a corner, as Dan was about to shoot.  The ball came to Tom.  He one-two’d with Jordan before finding Josh, and he threaded the ball through to Dan, but his shot was just wide.  Spike won the ball in defence and gave it to Tom.  He then hit the perfect defence dissecting pass for Dan to run onto, but the ‘keeper saved his well-struck shot.  Tom then cleared long to Dan.  He hit it past one defender and beat him, but the touch had gone too close to the ‘keeper and he smothered it.  Tom threw into the area where Josh won it.  He went through one tackle and shot, but the ‘keeper was able to make the save.  Dan got it wide and passed to Josh.  He then played Jordan through and he ran onto it, but the shot was at the ‘keeper.

HALF-TIME : ST NICK’S ‘B’   0     FRYS   1

A long ball was played down the line and Spike chased with great determination to win a corner.  Jordan and Callum then pass the ball around well, before Callum’s ball forward saw Josh battle and win a corner.  Spike stopped the ball going for a goal kick and got it to Jordan.  He found Josh who initially powered through two defenders, but more came and in the end there were just too many of them.  Good battling by Oscar and Dan got the ball through to josh, but the ‘keeper was out and just got there first.  They broke from a corner and got to our box.  The shot deflected off Callum onto the post, but this threw Jamie as he was committed to going for it.  It rolled across goal and Josh tried to stop himself on the line but it just went past him, and with less than a minute to go, they had their first shot of the game and it was the equaliser 1-1.  Josh ran with the ball from the kick, through their defence, but his shot was just wide.  30 seconds later and the game ended.  I will apologise for the briefness of the second half commentary, but the game was so engrossing that I kept forgetting to commentate!

Afterthoughts…………………………………………………………

An interesting game!  The first game for me was a fairly even affair.  They created a lot of chances and took four, we created a lot of chances and took none.  If we played them again, it could easily be the other way around.  The second game was totally different.  The team that hadn’t bothered at DRG turned up with a vengeance.  We battled, passed and played superbly and on another day could have got back, not just the four-goal deficit, but at least the same again.  As it happens, we got one, and they took their one chance when it finally came along.

Don’t forget our final resting game, Sunday 26th Feb against Saltford – Spike, Luke, Jack & Sam B.
